Sorry to push DrummerWife's weekly "letter to Aaron" down the page...

...but I wanted to formally make an announcement...

I know I hinted at something being in the works a few weeks back for the holidays. And then DrummerWife lost her job, and we had to sort that mess out, and wait to hear back from some parties regarding our little plan. Everything has fallen into place, though not the way we originally anticipated.

I would like to take this opportunity to officially announce that we are going to be operating a small toy drive in Aaron's honor this holiday season. This is something that I have felt called to do for several weeks now, and thanks to DrummerWife's (and others) organization over the last few weeks, it's finally a reality.

Initially, we wanted to honor Aaron's memory by gathering toys for hospitalized children at Bryn Mawr Hospital - the same hospital that Aaron spent his entire short life in. But, after contacting Bryn Mawr about making a toy donation to them...they never returned our calls.

So...we've decided to donate toys to ANOTHER hospital. The Hershey Medical Center, to be exact. They've got a huge, great children's ward, and any hospital is just as deserving as any other.

So, here's the plan: we want any of you who care to join us to purchase a toy that meets the requirements on this list, and then, if you don't already know our address, or the address of our parents, email me @ joshua.r.young@gmail.com, and I'll get it to you, and then we want you to send the gift to us, and we'll make one big donation in Aaron's name to the children's ward some time during December.

I'm sorry it took so long to get this information out to you. We tried to get this together as fast as we could, but once again, life interfered with our plans. :)

If you want to do anything to help remember Aaron this holiday season, please participate in this with us, or simply make a donation to your own nearby children's ward in Aaron's name. Since Aaron spent his entire life in the hospital, we want to do what we can for children who are stuck living there over the holiday season.

I am so sorry to hear that Bryn Mawr never got back to you. That breaks my heart. I will be sure to make a generous donation in Aaron's name, however to Bryn Mawr. As that is where my heart it.

I have joined the PAN committee at Bryn Mawr (Main Line Health) so I will mention this.

Hi Josh and Nikki. I been home recovering from a little surgery. So I have been getting in touch with some old friends etc. I'm sorry Bryn Mawr did not get back to you about the toy drive.Is there anything you would like me to do from my end. I would love to hand out toys to needy children in honor of Aaron. It would mean something very special to me. Nurse Karen

Aaron didn't make it.

About 3 hours ago, Aaron passed away. After speaking with his doctors earlier in the last few weeks, we decided that if at any point they were no longer supporting Aaron's life, but instead preventing him from dying, that we didn't want him to suffer any longer. We reached that point this morning. Aaron had been struggling for life from Day One, and after surgery, and several weeks of fighting, Aaron ran out of strength. He fought hard, but the strain of surgery just proved to be too much for him. I'm sure I'll feel up to posting more information later. Eighteen.

 18, Aaron. Holy shit, kid (calm down, you're 18 in about 5 hours, I can curse in front of you now, plus, I've had a couple drinks, my language is a bit loose). You're an adult. You're old enough to drive, you'd be looking at college or technical school, or backpacking across Europe in a gap year, or whatever weird thing kids are doing when they turn 18 these days. You'd be a person. A complete, fully realized, adult person. That's weird, kid, gotta admit. So, 18 is hitting your mom and I kinda hard. The idea of you at 18 is really blowing our minds. We were just barely not kids ourselves when you were born, and now we're talking about you as an adult. It's amazing to think about. IT WASN'T NEC!

After a long day of sitting at the hospital, hoping for the best, and preparing for the worst, the surgeon came in to talk to us and revealed to us that things went better than anyone could have possibly expected. Aaron never had an infection. What he did have though, was a hernia. He had a loop of intestine trapped beneath another loop, and while it was never "infected," it was trapped and deprived of blood, so it was dead. The surgeon removed the damaged loop, and thankfully, there is plenty more intestine left in there for Aaron. He's recovering peacefully from today's surgery, and was already at 28% oxygen (21% is room air) on the ventilator, and his other stats were all back where they were pre-surgery. He's doing fine. I want to thank everyone for their prayers and well-wishes during this time. I fully believe that Aaron wouldn't have rebounded from yesterday's procedure so quickly, and wouldn't have been as ready for today's if not for those...
