Happy Grandparents Day

A picture of the grandparents after the first surgery -
what a relief it was we had such good news that day.)

Well...today at church we took time in the service to honor Grandparents Day. I wanted to take a little bit of time to honor Aaron's four grandparents I wish more than anything else that today. I wish Aaron could be here to share in this day with you all. I wish I could be giving you with a new picture of him or some cute little gift. I wish you could have all seen him in the little Eagles outfit we had for him today while he watched his first football game. Instead, here I am just trying to say something to all of you so you know that we knew what today was.

I was trying to find a poem or something for you in honor of what today means...instead I found this it's from the sermon from Aaron's memorial service...

He was brought into a family that would stand together in love and faith facing what would probably be one of the most difficult and wonder-filled times of their lives. In the midst of facing the brevity of his life, we still come in response to Aaron's life, not only his death – because he remarkably engraved a place in each of our hearts and lives with his life. We will say goodbye, before most of us have even really been able to say hello, only because we must.
Victor Frankl once said
"We cannot judge a biography by its length, by the number of pages in it; we must judge by the richness of the contents. Sometimes the 'unfinisheds' are among the most beautiful symphonies."

Aaron touched each of you in his own way as baby son, or a grandchild, or the child of someone you care for dearly. There are many in this world who only dream of being loved, cared for, prayed for, and hoped for spread over an entire lifetime the amount that Aaron received in his infancy.

And even though those words are not my words - I do know this...First of all we are who we are because of the parents you were to us. We were able to be the parents we were to Aaron because we had good examples. Secondly, your love and support to Aaron was overwhelming. You loved him and helped us out so that we could spend as much time as possible with Aaron. He was loved more in 33 days than some are in a lifetime and his grandparents were right there with us on the crazy roller coaster ride.

Thank you for everything and thank you for being the best grandparents that Aaron could have ever asked for. Happy Grandparents Day!

You leave me touched and teary-eyed. Loving Aaron and his parents has been a blessing to me. The four of us watched as our children interracted with our little boy in a way that demonstrated courage and love, not just for Aaron, but for each other. God gave you to one another. When that happened, he also gave a gift to your parents. I do not have three children, I have four. I also have the memory of my beautiful grandson and pictures in mind of the two of you with him. The giggles, smiles and glances, hand holding (all three of you). That's the greatest gift any grandparent could ever ask for. I love you.

Thank you so much for the grandparent tribute. As Grandparent's Day approached (even though it's another one of those "card" holidays), I was very sad that I could not have the opportunity to hold, hug and kiss Aaron. I did however, hold, hug and kiss Aaron in my heart and mind - all day yesterday. I love both of you - for who you are, for how much you love each other and care for one another - just as you did for our precious, baby Aaron.

I love you!

Aaron didn't make it.

About 3 hours ago, Aaron passed away. After speaking with his doctors earlier in the last few weeks, we decided that if at any point they were no longer supporting Aaron's life, but instead preventing him from dying, that we didn't want him to suffer any longer. We reached that point this morning. Aaron had been struggling for life from Day One, and after surgery, and several weeks of fighting, Aaron ran out of strength. He fought hard, but the strain of surgery just proved to be too much for him. I'm sure I'll feel up to posting more information later. I just don't seem to have any energy left in me for relating this at the moment. But I did feel it was important to share this information with all of you who have been keeping tabs on us. Thank you for your concern, your prayers, and your well-wishes during this difficult time. We love you. P.S.: I'd like to leave you with the following lyrics that popped into my head while we held Aaron as he passed away. They

Eighteen.

18, Aaron. Holy shit, kid (calm down, you're 18 in about 5 hours, I can curse in front of you now, plus, I've had a couple drinks, my language is a bit loose). You're an adult. You're old enough to drive, you'd be looking at college or technical school, or backpacking across Europe in a gap year, or whatever weird thing kids are doing when they turn 18 these days. You'd be a person. A complete, fully realized, adult person. That's weird, kid, gotta admit. So, 18 is hitting your mom and I kinda hard. The idea of you at 18 is really blowing our minds. We were just barely not kids ourselves when you were born, and now we're talking about you as an adult. It's amazing to think about. As you well know, we've done a ton of work with, and fundraising for, the March of Dimes; donated money and goods to community health centers; donated craft goods to a local moms and babies' hospital for siblings of newborns; collected toys, pajamas, and games for l

Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts

We feel so loved and supported right now and would like to thank each and every one of you. Whether we know you or not we know we are in your thoughts. We told Aaron each and every day how loved he was and I know that he knew that. I know that all of you were praying for a different outcome in all of this, but obviously God had a different plan. There are moments when I am at peace with this and moments when I am not. As hard and upsetting as it was - I am not sure I will ever experience a more peaceful moment as I did when I sat there holding Aaron after they had all the tubes and wires off and before he actually passed. Yes, I did hold him the whole time - at first I didn't think I could but God gave me the strength and I am so happy that I did. Josh pointed out last night that the time they placed him in my arms was at 12:44 pm. Ironically, Aaron was born at 12:44 am - I don't think that was a coincidence. My brother-in-law pointed out to me that Aaron was in our lives for 3
